The Erratic

What is The Erratic?

Have you seen the large boulder sitting outside The Boulders Gym at Stelly’s High School?  That large hunk of sculpted concrete is fondly known as The Erratic.  A gift to the community from The Boulders climbing gym, it gives students the public a free place to climb and develop their skills.  There’s even a sign that gives you some basic climbing techniques.

The word ‘erratic’ derives from the Latin erratus, which means literally "ground that has wandered", geologists most commonly use the term erratic to describe boulders left behind by glacial ice. Locally, the rocks are usually referred to simply as fieldstones or boulders or just *!?/#! rocks, depending on your point of view.

Despite its outward appearance it isn’t a natural rock but was built and sculpted by Stan Scott and The Edge Climbing Wall Systems in 2004. This steel-based sculpted concrete structure was built with the financial support of the community, and particular thanks go to lead sponsor Coast Capital Savings.
